The Nervous Colon Syndrome is a functional illness of the intestine which involves pain, abdominal distension and change in bowel habits. Conventional treatments only relieve the symptoms, but the systemic formulas get to stop its progress.

Although the cause of this illness is unknown, its origin may be due to different factors: stress, insomnia, the effect of some antibiotics, abdominal infections, inappropriate diet and abdominal surgery . Today, it is considered to be a condition related to abnormal intestinal movement and sensibility, related with psychological factors that aggravate and maintain it.

Most common symptoms

  • Pain, distension or abdominal discomfort
  • Abnormal bowel habits with periods of constipation and diarrhea
  • Sensation of incomplete bowel movement
  • Mucus in the stool

Other symptoms

  • Nauseas
  • Difficulty to swallow
  • Early sensation of satisfaction when eating
  • Back pain
  • Urinary urgency
  • Painful sexual relations
  • Fibromialgy

Criteria for its diagnosis:

Presence, during at least three months, of two of the following main criteria: (continuous or recurring symptoms that include ):

1) Pain or abdominal discomfort relieved by bowel movement.
2) Change of consistency of stool
3) Change of frequency of bowel movement.

The conventional treatment only relieves the symptoms but does not alter the permanence and progress of the illness. Antispasmodics, laxatives, antidepressants and diets based on fibers are usually prescribed. Other drugs have also been prescribed lately, as are the "serotonin agonists" that improve muscular movement and the production of intestinal liquid, which increase the frequency of bowel movements and reduce pain and abdominal inflammation. However, these medications may produce adverse side effects such as: severe allergy reactions, diarrhea, gastric discomfort, flatulence, cephalea, back and legs pain and joints' inflammation or pain.

At the Adaptogenous Medical Units or Centers, many patients who have been suffering from this condition from long time ago are assisted. We prescribe a combination of herbs which have been formulated according to the Systemic Medicine, achieving an extraordinary improvement in the symptoms and in their life quality .
