The erectile dysfunction is defined as a recurrent or continued incapacity in men to obtain or maintain a penile erection long enough to sustain a healthy sexual activity. This produces frustration and affects self-esteem as well as the couple's relationship.
It is estimated that more than half of the men over the age of 40 are affected in some degree by erectile dysfunction and it expected that the number of men that will suffer this disease will reach 322 million by 2025 (1, 2). Experts estimate that only between 15% to 20% of men that suffer this dysfunction receive some sort of treatment (3). Diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, cardiac or thyroid alterations, circulatory obstructions, low testosterone levels, spinal chord injuries, lesions to nerves caused by prostatectomy, neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease, medications like beta blockers, cardio tonics such as digoxin, medicines for peptic ulcers, sedatives, anti-depressives, nicotine consumption, alcohol, psychoactive drugs, among others, may be at the origin of this disease, but the cause could also be of psychological origin such as depression, stress, fear, anxiety or anger, unrealistic sexual expectations or poor communication with the sexual partner. There are nowadays therapeutic alternatives which include oral medicines, local injections, surgery and others. Among the oral pharmaceutical alternatives are: sildenafil , vardenafil and tadalafil. These are prescribed in the case of mild to moderate erectile difficulties of organic or psychological origin.
Although these medicines have become extremely popular, they do not constitute an universal panacea, producing multiple secondary or side effects, such as: cefalea, dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, infertility, vision disorder, nasal congestion, ginecomastia, painful and/or prolonged erection, dysuria, thorax pain, and others. They interact with medications such as nitroglycerine, significantly diminishing blood pressure and causing even death.
