Seborrheic Dermatitis is a very frequent chronic process that is characterized by the formation of yellowish white scales or reddish plaques, dry skin -which fall off easily- located in different areas of the body, generally in areas where a great number of sebaceous glands exists, such as: scalp, eyebrows, nasal and lips skin folds, nose, forehead, rear part of the ears, the external ear and throughout the body's skin folds, that can be accompanied by inflammation, itching and/or reddening of the skin. The loss of hair can also be associated with this disease. In many cases it can be complicated with bacterial or secondary fungi infections and always a low self-esteem and psychological suffering go together with these patients.
Although it affects at any age, the greater incidence is observed between the first two weeks to three months of life and between 40 and 60 years of age, especially in men. It is estimated that there could exist a hereditary transmission, given the high incidence that is observed in some families.
Its cause is unknown, nevertheless different aggressor agents, physical, chemical, biological or emotional such as stress, situations of emotional tension, fatigue, alcohol, extreme climates, greasy skin, cosmetics with greasy content, the use of lotions that contain alcohol, skin disorders such as acne, or obesity can increase the risk of suffering it. Also, neurological affections such as Parkinson's disease, and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are related to a greater incidence of seborrheic dermatitis.
