It is the most recent strategy to fight Cancer, which since the times when surgery was used has been adding alternatives such as hormone therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Now new drugs are being developed addressed against specific therapeutic objectives, the majority by design, but still of a too generic action, situation which will change 'soon' with the 'cascade of new even more specific epigenetic pharmaceuticals' which we will witness, predicts Manuel Esteller, Director of the Epigenetic Cancer Laboratory at the Spanish National Oncology Investigation Center ( Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas -CNIO) .
This experts whom describes Epigenetics -scientific discipline which studies the modulation of gene expression- as 'the orthography or grammar which provides sense and orders words, which are the genes', does not have any doubts with respect to the possibilities that it brings in the design of new drugs against cancer. 'I imagine a very brilliant future for Epigenetics because it will explain why tumors appear and will allow to make predictions concerning the evolution of a tumor as well as provide answers to the necessary therapies' explains pointing out that certain epigenetic profiles may provide information concerning patient's whom will respond to a certain therapy. The benefits of which could be applied in 90% of the tumors with a similar altered epigenetic pattern which impedes genes from normally inhibiting the action of cancer.
The objective of epigenetic pharmaceuticals is to inhibit the enzymes that produce catalytic actions in the molecular order which give birth to a cancer, or to induce the dormant genes to express themselves and inhibit tumors.
