Doctors Carlos Garrocho Machado and Irene Gauna de G ó mez Lassalle showed their preoccupation by the increase in the number of cases in hepatic pathologies in latter stages. The specialists explained that that problem could be avoided through a simple transaminase (enzymes of the liver who usually express that the destruction of hepatic cells exists) analysis.
' Thus just as the clinical doctor evaluating a simple headache requests diverse types of analysis, studies of the liver should include a medical routine' , stated G ó mez Lasalle.
On the other hand, Doctor Fernando Bessone, from Hospital Centenario of Rosario, declared that of all the hepatic pathologies, the one that worries most the world-wide medical community is hepatitis C.
It is a silent epidemic that produces million of deaths per year. It has a carrier rate of around 200 million people in the world. Being symptomatic, most of the patients do not have knowledge that they are carrying it, until the symptoms appear in a delayed form, with such severe complications that it requires a transplant.
Bessone explained that patients who acquire the virus today, in the turn of 5, 10 or 15 years will be developing a terminal disease.
The virus of hepatitis C is the number one reason for hepatic transplant in the world, and represents 40% of total liver transplants in the world.
