Although many theories exist on why cellulites appears, nowadays the most accepted theory is the one that describes an interruption of the lymphatic drainage which produces lymphatic and sanguineous obstruction, leading to an increase in localized fat and to cellulites.

The fat retention and production is influenced by estrogens, especially in hips and gluteus. For that reason the higher recurrence of cellulites in women. In addition, the fibrous bands of muscles in women are arranged vertically forming pockets that keep fat like a mattress.

Nowadays there exist multiple compositions in creams and gels whose main objective is to stimulate drainage and circulation. Within the substances with verified scientific effectiveness is Ginkgo bilova; that improves microcirculation, is anti-inflammatory and antioxidative and is used in 1 to 3 % concentrations in creams -for local application- and in drinking beverages affirms Dr. Betssy Hazoury.

Dr. Hazoury added that metylxanthines, of which the most important are caffeine and theophylline , stimulate lipolysis and circulation. Hydrocotile asiatica another well-known medicinal plant, acts as an anti-inflammatory of the area and is prepared in creams, for mesotherapy- and in capsules. Melilotus officinalis, or sweet clover, diminishes lymphatic edema and improves circulation.

The best treatment is the preventive treatment, always controlling, as far as possible, influential factors. Physical exercise is important as prevention in this pathology. Sedentary habits have to be avoided; toxics and tight clothes must be shunned, avoid incorrect footwear and high heels, stress, constipation, intake of oral contraceptives, excess salt, heat, prolonged exposure to the sun and maintain an ideal weight.
